1960s Vulcain Cricket Alarm (ref. H.99.101)

When you think of the President’s watch, odds are the Rolex Day-Date comes to mind. And while it is true that many US Presidents have worn Rolex’s halo luxury model, it’s a watch that would undeniably still be an icon without any such provenance.

After all, it’s a Rolex rendered in precious metals. However, there is another watch that bears the distinction of being the President’s timepiece: The Vulcain Cricket. In this episode of our series Under the Radar, Craft + Tailored’s very own president of unprecedented value, Tyler “Commander in Cheap” Vanes, shines a light on an alarmingly cool (and affordable) variant of the Vulcain Cricket – a 1960s Cricket Alarm ref. H.99.101.

There are many serious watch enthusiasts that would argue that the Vulcain Cricket is the real President’s watch. Some variant of Vulcain’s most popular model has been worn by nearly every US President since Harry S. Truman, and while the Cricket’s provenance might make it seem like a watch that would fail to meet Under the Radar’s requirements, these handsome, functional, and history-packed watches have lived in the shadow of Rolex’s favored gold son for far too long. Not only were these watches consistently worn by Presidents, they were one of the very first wristwatches equipped with an alarm function to be mass-produced and marketed. Initially introduced in 1947, the Cricket’s alarm function is more than just an intriguing complication for horology nerds: It’s what makes it an ideal watch for people like heads of state who always have to be somewhere and live on tight schedules.

Monumental history aside, these watches are also aesthetically pleasing, easy-to-wear at 34mm, and you can find them well-under the $2000 price point. The particular example we’re highlighting in this episode is from the ‘60s and exceptionally attractive, with its nickel plated brass case, straight lugs, twin crowns, and detailed, but uncomplicated two-tone silver dial. Good enough for a President, but perfect for as a versatile, vintage daily driver.
