In this episode of “What Is On My Wrist” Cam talks about a 1966 Omega Seamaster 300 Ref. 165.024. There is something about the early vintage Omega Seamasters that truly embodies the golden era of dive watches of the 1960-1970s. Cam takes us through this cool example from 1966 and provides a brief overview of the vintage Omega Seamaster 300 reference range.
The seahorse adorned case back of the Seamaster series pays tribute to Neptune, the Roman god of the sea. The seahorse logo was conceived by engraver Jean-Pierre Borle. He was inspired by an image of Neptune driving a chariot pulled by seahorses, which is why the Omega seahorses are depicted wearing bridles.
The reference 165.024 has a specific feeling and look that centers it as one of the most desirable vintage Omega diving watches ever produced by the brand. The bi-directional luminous filled bakelite bezel paired with the high visibility 3-6-9 dial paired with the references overall larger size allows the 165.024 to remain relevant in today’s sizing trends ultimately making it an icon. The Seamaster 300 references are becoming harder to find as collectors have started to gravitate towards the reference and as awareness increases around the iconic nature of the Omega Seamaster 300 references as a whole.
