The exotic Daytonas of the ‘60s and ‘70s represent some of the most aspirational buys in the entire vintage watch world and there’s just something special about Rolex’s premier chronograph and its many variations that gets even the most stone-faced watch enthusiast waxing poetic about pusher types and dial variants. And when these icons of the sportswatch world are rendered in yellow gold, this already striking design races into a commanding visual space that is just impossible to ignore. Is a full gold Daytona a bit ostentatious? Sure. Is it a watch that transforms the wearer? Ask anyone that’s had the pleasure of wearing one and you’ll be met with a resounding chorus of “hell yeah!” While it’s our job to put those feelings into words, wearing a full gold Daytona is just one of those rare wristwatch experiences that escape easy explanation. However, in this installment of our series What Is On My Wrist, Craft + Tailored CEO Cameron Barr makes a valiant effort to articulate what we love about the gold Daytona experience.
In this episode, we feature an absolutely fabulous example of a Daytona ref. 6265 that was made in 1985. In addition to its bold gold case and bracelet, this Daytona sports a less commonly seen high-contrast black dial (yellow gold 6265s were more commonly fitted with “champagne” dials), which we think balances the look of the watch in a really wonderful way relative to its “champagne” siblings. Not only are these watches rare, but this particular example is also in incredible condition and what we’d consider a proper case study for yellow gold 6265s, making it an ideal watch for us to feature in this series.
Additionally, this specific ref. 6265 was made later in the reference’s production run and as such, boasts some unique features that we walk through in the video. This is one of those watches that we feel stands on its own as a piece of art, even divorced from whether or not you can imagine yourself wearing one. The gold 6265 is a watch that embodies everything we love about the absurdity of a full gold sportswatch, and everything we love about Rolex’s design language in the days before the marque’s case sizes blew up and its steel production slowed.
