Inside Craft+Tailored Magazine Issue No. 01

Issue No. 01 of the Craft+Tailored Magazine arrived quietly. There was no launch campaign. No advertising push. No countdown clock. A small run of magazines simply began finding their way into the hands of collectors, clients, friends, and a few unsuspecting strangers... And for those who may have missed it, Issue No. 01 marks the beginning of something we've been thinking about for a long time...

Before diving into the issue itself, it’s worth mentioning that very little inside Craft + Tailored Magazine happens by accident. The cover of Issue No. 01 is a perfect example.

The watch featured on the cover was originally sold by Craft+Tailored to photographer Vince Perraud. When Vince acquired the watch, we spent more time talking about the life the watch may have lived before either of us owned it than we did discussing the watch itself. The warm patina of the dial almost looked nicotine-stained, as if it had spent decades accompanying a late-night smoker through countless cigarettes, conversations, and long evenings. Whether any of that was true hardly mattered. Like all great vintage watches, it invited speculation and curiosity.

Months later, Vince sent over a photograph of the watch wrapped around a pack of Marlboros. The image wasn’t commissioned, wasn’t shot for the magazine, and wasn’t intended to become a cover. In many ways, the watch inspired the photograph itself. It felt honest. Unforced. The kind of image that could only happen organically.

The moment I saw it, I knew it belonged on the front of Issue No. 01.

Stories like that exist throughout this magazine. The watches, cities, people, and objects featured within the pages of the C+T magazine weren’t selected to fill space. Each carries a story, a memory, a friendship, or a connection that made it impossible to ignore. This is really what the Craft + Tailored Magazine is about.

Not because they’re trending. Not just because they’re valuable. But because we find them interesting.

The inspiration for the magazine came from a growing frustrated with how we consume content today (myself included). Everything feels faster, shorter, and more disposable. Stories are skimmed, forgotten, and replaced before they’ve had a chance to leave an impression. We spend hours scrolling and somehow walk away with very little.

We wanted to create something that was meant to be revisited, dog-eared, marked up, and left on a coffee table. To send you down a rabbit hole. To introduce you to someone, somewhere, or something you didn’t know existed before turning the page. Personally, I have found that the best magazines and books don’t simply inform me – they stay with me.

Inside the C+T Magazine you’ll find stories that range from deep vintage watch scholarship to explorations of travel, photography, craftsmanship, collecting, and culture.

It’s something that yields to the impulse to look a little closer.

Objects Worth Obsessing Over

Every great obsession starts somewhere.

For Issue No. 01, that meant beginning with the objects that continue to occupy our attention long after the novelty has worn off.

Readers will find Tyler Vanes’s exploration of the Cartier Cristallor, one of the brand’s most overlooked and compelling vintage references. We venture into the world of vintage hi-fi through the legendary McIntosh MC30 amplifier and trace the remarkable story of how a Heuer dash timer that once flew aboard a British Airways Concorde somehow found its way into my personal collection after a late night on Ebay.

Elsewhere, we revisit a favorite everyday companion, the Leica M240, reflecting on how certain tools become far more than what they were originally designed to be. Different objects. Different stories. The same idea: the things we choose to keep close often reveal more about us than we realize.

People, Places, & Perspective

Beyond the watches, Issue No. 01 also introduces readers to the people and places that continue to inspire us.

One of the unexpected benefits of doing what we do is the people we meet along the way. Some become friends. Some become collaborators. Others simply influence the way we think about collecting, craftsmanship, creativity, and culture. Issue No. 01 is filled with these people.

We spend time with jewelry maker Troy Oviedo, highlight collectors and personalities including Erika Ratini, Trevor Wynn, and Carlotta Parmegiani, and celebrate the individuals who remind us that passion-led expertise still matters in an increasingly automated world.

We also step into the cities that continue to shape the way we see the world. From the high energy and constant discovery of Hong Kong to the timeless character of London’s Piccadilly through the lens of Justin Hast to a day spent exploring Los Angeles with our friend Edgy Albert, some of our favorite stories in the issue have very little to do with watches at all.

Going Deeper

While Issue No. 01 celebrates the broader culture of collecting, it also includes some of the deepest editorial work we’ve published to date.

At the center of the issue sits a comprehensive Case Study on the Explorer Dial Rolex Submariner, a watch that perfectly illustrates why vintage collecting remains endlessly fascinating. What appears simple at first glance becomes a lesson in nuance, rarity, provenance, and the small details that separate an ordinary watch from a truly extraordinary one.

Elsewhere, we explore the enduring appeal of vintage gold sport watches in “Going For Gold” and share lessons learned through years spent buying, selling, studying, and occasionally making mistakes in “10 Things I Wish I’d Known When I Started Collecting Vintage Watches.”

We built Issue No. 01 to be the magazine we’d want to discover in a hotel lobby, borrow from a friend, or revisit years later. Hopefully you’ll feel the same way. Inside are 120 pages dedicated to vintage watches, travel, photography, craftsmanship, collecting, and the people behind it all. No advertisements. No trend reports. No filler. Just stories for the people who still care.

Whether you’re a lifelong collector, a curious newcomer, or simply someone who appreciates well-made things and the stories behind them, Issue No. 01 was created for you. We hope you enjoy reading it as much as we enjoyed making it.

Founder and CEO of Craft + Tailored, Cameron Barr searches the globe for vintage timepieces and ephemera. His passion for telling the stories behind these incredible objects laid the foundation for C+T and the Journal.
