Tudor Black Bay Fifty-Eight 925

No vintage-inspired modern watch has had the kind of widespread success the Tudor Black Bay Fifty-Eight has enjoyed. We’ve discussed our love for these watches many, many times on this channel; the truth is they’re watches we own personally, watches we wear proudly, and watches that do something very, very rare in combining the charm, style, and wrist presence of a vintage classic with the rugged durability and less-precious wearability of a modern watch.

They’re the perfect daily driver, the perfect travel watch for those that don’t feel comfortable dragging their vintage pieces abroad, and they’re a modern classic in every way. And while the Black Bay Fifty-Eight line in general admittedly doesn’t exactly qualify as the under the radar, there are vamps on the Black Bay Fifty-Eight form within the current lineup that we think deserve a little more attention – like the 925 variant.

In this episode of our series Under the Radar, C + T’s in-house champion of the unsung, Tyler Vanes, takes a week off from vintage obscurities to shine a light on his personal Black Bay Fifty-Eight 925. These watches throw a really killer twist on the Black Bay form by featuring the typical BB58 39mm case, but rendered in sterling silver – something that was once commonplace for watches, but is rarely seen these days. Sterling silver has its own characteristics in-the-metal that is more unique than one might expect relative stainless steel and white gold; it’s still a bright-looking metal, but it reacts to light in a different way and in the context of the Black Bay Fifty-Eight 925, with its impeccable finishing and brushing, silver is both understated and multidimensional at once. Silver is also quite a bit softer than steel, so these watches have a tendency to develop case patina at a faster rate than their steel siblings, something we personally really appreciate and think works especially well with that taupe bezel insert (which reminds us of a vintage Submariner with a faded “ghost” bezel in the best way).

The Black Bay Fifty-Eight 925 is powered by a robust in-house calibre MT5400 movement, which is COSC-rated and has kept astonishingly good time for the 3 weeks of consistent wrist time it has enjoyed in Tyler’s care. These watches also feature a display-style caseback. The Black Bay Fifty-Eight 925 is its own unique thing – one that will satisfy the needs of vintage fans and Black Bay fans, but also transcends the Black Bay line to become something altogether its own.
