A program aimed at allowing Porsche Design enthusiasts to create and customize nearly every aspect of their watch. The configurator fits nicely into the brand’s history of creating extremely choice design objects with a distinct aim of utilitarianism.
Porsche Design’s first wristwatch was the Porsche Design Chronograph I executed with the help of Orfina and introduced in 1972, the first year of the company’s history. This Ferdinand Alexander Porsche design is brilliantly refined with design inspiration of simple contrast—Ferdinand created a black dial with white markers for function. The PVD coated steel case is the first of its kind, a truly mind-blowing fact. Continuing on through the 1970s, Porsche Design collaborated with manufacturers IWC and Eterna to carry out their groundbreaking pieces. In carrying on with firsts in the watch space, in 1980, the brand introduced their Titan Chronograph with IWC, the first titanium cased wristwatch.
In the new watch configurator tool, based on the 911 car configurator, design cues are true to the Porsche Design brand, akin to the legacy Orfina and IWC pieces as opposed to what is hot and fashionable in the watch market today. Most notably, case options are bead-blasted titanium or PVD—extremely true to the Porsche Design history and a real nod to collectors.
Build quality stands out in hand with “look closer” details that wowed us like a three-piece rehaut, unique running seconds sub-dial, and an applied logo that is recessed into the dial surface. This is a well-made watch, it is not something where the novelty of creating your own colors on a website is concluded with the owner being disappointed upon delivery. Built upon a heartbeat that is COSC certified, the brand did an excellent job creating a product that is not a car brand making watches—Porsche Design wristwatches have never been an afterthought slapped together to get more money.
The program is aimed at Porsche owners, designing a watch to match their new Porsche, but the use case of this tool could be much wider. A customer could design a watch to match an upcoming car purchase or even use the options to recreate their favorite iconic or racing Porsche in wristwatch form. With 1.5 million configurations and 300 straps to choose from, it is a robust program that should be given a look given you’re into Porsche and their legendary design language.
